He had a lot of different roles over the years.

On "Sanford and Son", he was neighbor Julio Fuentes. He had a memorable guest role as a Jewish (!!) activist for the "Hebrew Defense League" on "All in the Family", and his character was killed in a dramatic car explosion at the end. His biggest career mistake was asking to be written out of "Miami Vice" after the first few episodes, where he played Lieutenant Lou Rodriguez. A new character, played by Edward James Olmos, was written to replace him.

Also of course Chano on "Barney Miller" and "Tricks Are Not Treats" also featured Ron Glass, who would also be part of "Barney Miller" as Harris. Sierra's also in "The Towering Inferno" as the bartender who gets killed in the climax of the film and I read once where his character was supposed to live but when they decided *someone* had to die in the climax, and that it wouldn't be acceptable for it to be Newman or McQueen or William Holden, they decided Sierra's bartender would fill the need.

I may have read once where Sierra's quick exit from "Miami Vice" was intentional from the beginning to fool the audience.

I read that Sierra himself wanted out of MIAMI VICE because he couldn’t stand the Miami heat, where he would have had to live. He wanted to go back to New York. That’s why they brought in Edward James Olmos to replace him. In the end it all worked out for the best. The way Sierra played the captain he could have been the captain of any standard TV police drama at the time. Olmos, however, was unlike any TV police captain and therefore fit the show like a glove, which also was unlike any other TV cop drama.
