I find the idea fascinating that Brown was under consideration. However, I don't think the show (scratch that, both shows) would have been nearly as successful.

He wasn't just under consideration. He actually had the part before being dropped just days before the start of production. There are two stories out there as to what happened. Freeman's widow said that CBS demanded Brown be replaced explanation, but if you look at former CBS VP Perry Lafferty's television academy interview, he says that Freeman called him in a near-panic and said Brown was just not right and needed to be replaced.
I loved the statement that Jack Lord said he would have rowed to Hawaii in a boat to get the McGarrett part. He really wanted the gig and I’m sure we’re all grateful he got it. His dedication to the show was very evident from the start. He may have alienated some folks but he sure was dedicated to making the show a success.
