Thread: "The Finishing Touch" at 50

Tonight 50 years ago, CBS aired S06E11 "The Finishing Touch".

The episode involves document expert Norman Cargill (George Voskovec) who is going blind. He's trying to complete the biggest rip-off to end his career and ride off into the sunset.

The problem is Cargill is a Grade-A weasel and murderous jackass. By the way, that's insulting the weasels and jackasses.

He begins with a bunch of forged bonds he had printed. He poisons the printer, Raymond Sakai (Seth Sakai), and makes it appear as a suicide. He also kidnaps and murders bank teller Olivia Hillis (Linda Ryan) – essentially leaving behind no witnesses. His master plan also includes ditching his girlfriend Maxine Taylor (Lynn Carlin) and running off with all the money.

Five-O gets involved due to forged bonds showing up. Unless proven fake, the State of Hawaii is on the hook to pay all monies associated with the bond. Due to his expertise, Cargill is called in by Five-O to check the authenticity of the bonds. It's said he's done this work for them in the past so it makes sense they would use him.

In this trusted position, Cargill takes advantage and forges yet more bonds. Later, Che Fong (Harry Endo) discovers the truth because Cargill's prints are the only prints on the bonds.

Cargill is making a run for it when McGarrett and the team stop him. Because of their past working relationship and friendship, Cargill is expecting a break. Of course this doesn't happen because McGarrett has no patience for murder.

This is a strong episode with an interesting plot that's not overly convoluted. Again, not one of my favorites, but I like it a lot.

The whole bond and stocks issue is confusing by itself. Fortunately, the show doesn't go into the weeds on it; just enough to push the plot forward.

This is yet another example of McGarrett getting hoodwinked by someone supposedly on the right side of the law. Oops!

An early Happy Thanksgiving to the American fans out there!

Also, Happy 50th, "The Finishing Touch"!!!

Another example IMO of how Watergate influenced these kind of stories of murderers and crooks in authority that you never would have seen in 1968-69.
