I didn’t know he was doing anything in recent years anyway. Thought he was already retired.
Actually he pretty much retired after OHMSS. LOL. Save for some cheap Hong Kong B-movies.
He did two unofficial reprises as James Bond in all but name. First in the 1983 TV-movie "Return of the Man From UNCLE" where he played a British spy named "JB." And then in an episode of the late 80s cable remake of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" where he's obviously supposed to be Bond but when he introduces himself, there's a convenient burst of static that drowns out his last name.
Some bad advice from a friend was why he walked away from the Bond films after one time because he got convinced that 007 was too "establishment" and that counter-culture movies were going to be the rage of Hollywood. In the process he derailed any chance of a decent career.
It didn’t help matters that after the release of OHMSS and during the promotional tours he acted like a jerk and a diva and wouldn’t even listen to Cubby and Harry (the producers) and get himself clean shaven and a haircut, befitting his 007 persona. Instead he showed up at the various premieres looking like a hippie with mustache and beard and long hair. He basically thought he had it made and was now a major film star. He figured producers would be calling him left and right trying to cast him in their next Easy Rider type film.
