Thread: Grave, Body, What!? at 50

50 years ago, CBS aired S07E06: “Right Grave – Wrong Body”

A police officer that knows Five-O really well is in a world of hurt due to bad decisions five years before.

Dean Lyman (Charles Cioffi) chased a bank robber when the guy went past him like a bat out of hell. The guy, Kaneko, had a bunch of money on him at the time. Lyman took it for himself without telling anyone after Lyman killed him and buried Kaneko. It was $250,000 from a bank robbery. Kind of dumb, if you ask me.

A couple of years later, Lyman lost his gun and now it has turned up again in a series of liquor store robberies. Don Hobart (William Watson) returns from the mainland with some unsolved murders in his wake. He hooks up with an old girlfriend Kelly Mitsui (Carole Kai).

Hobart tells a guy, Cas (Lippy Espinda), to go away after Cas hits Kelly up for some money. Cas turns around and informs Lyman about Hobart due to Five-O’s work with the Identi-Kit to come up with a composite of the robber. Even if Lyman tries to throw them off track.

Hobart kills Cas just after he talks to Lyman. It doesn’t end well for anyone – Lyman commits suicide and Hobart gets booked.

Mr. Mike has a great review here: https://www.fiveohomepage.com/5-0log7.htm#150

This is again, not one of my favorites. There’s too many things that fit too neatly into place. As well, Lyman takes extreme measures to get out the trouble he’s in. However, Cioffi does well with what he has.

Mr. Mike points out that Chinatown provides a great backdrop to this episode and I agree.

Happy 50th, “Right Grave – Wrong Body”!!

Correction, John. The 2 best Charles Cioffi episodes are McGarrett is Missing and The Skyline Killer.

Then Right Grave, and then finally Head to Head.

Right Grave, Wrong Body 3.25 Stars ⭐⭐⭐.25 Out Of 4 Stars.

This is probably my FAV Charles Cioffi episode. Cioffi plays Officer Dean Lyman a likeable and respected police officer. He has a dark secret that has suddenly resurfaced. Kaneko's remains have been discovered during some digging at the cemetery 🪦. Lyman had killed Kaneko during a firefight with him after a bank robbery. Officer Lyman was alone and picked up the $250,000. Hiding the money 💰 in a toolbox but never spending it. The incident happened approximately 5 years ago. Lyman also has to track down his service weapon 848 which was stolen some years back and now is in the hands of Don Hobart. A low-life criminal who has been committing a series of liquor store robberies. Officer Lyman must gain possession of the weapon before they can match the gun with Kaneko's death. Lyman has a chance encounter noticing a fleeing Hobart after another liquor store robbery. He chases after him but Hobart runs away. Lyman injects himself into the investigation making changes to the Identi-Kit suspect. Lyman needs time to track down Hobart. Through using informants and his investigation, Lyman locates Hobart's place. HFO receives a break when 1 of the liquor store employees fights back causing Hobart to break off part of the gun butt. Che Fong's great forensic wizardry produces a number 848. McG & HFO team match the number to Officer Dean Lyman. They also received a hit on the Identi-Kit suspect Don Hobart. Lyman is alone trying to locate his gun in Hobart's place. Dean suddenly commits suicide knowing the cops are closing in hearing the sirens. They locate Hobart and the weapon. It's a horrible ending for Officer Lyman. It would be interested what Lyman would be charged with had he not committed suicide. The firefight with Kaneko was self-defense and the money could have been returned. JC
