Thread: Hanging Our Own for 50 years

50 years ago tonight, CBS aired S07E07 “We Hang Our Own”.

This is an excellent episode! For one, there are some familiar faces in this episode besides the Five-O stock players.

Leslie Nielsen plays ‘Colonel’ Farraday who is more like “an emperor.” Nielsen is fantastic in this dramatic role. His son Cam (a young Bruce Boxleitner) returns to the Big Island after his college years. Cam is supposed to takeover the large ranch operations from his father. Yeah, not so fast.

Perry King plays Jay Farraday who picks up Cam from the airport via the back way. I’ll get to that later.

The pair stop at a local bar on the way home where Cam wants to pick up where he left off with his old girlfriend Carmen (Elissa Dulce). The only problem is that she’s now married to Larry (Gerry Waialae) who is very jealous of Cam. Larry and Cam fight behind the bar where Larry knocks Cam to the ground.

Things get interesting quick as Cam is found dead! Of course, the Colonel immediately blames Larry and is ticked off every which way when the judge finds the charges only justify manslaughter. The Colonel wants Larry to be charged with murder.

Five-O has been called in for backup but even Danno and Chin think this is above them. They call in McGarrett. The interactions between the two bulls – McGarrett and The Colonel – are fun to watch.

As Five-O investigates, the Colonel’s punks kidnap Larry to mete out their own justice. Meanwhile, Carmen tells them that Cam was alive after she and Larry left him. When it’s all said and done, Larry is rescued from the Colonel. On top of that, Jay is the actual killer! Oops! Plus, the Colonel is arrested for kidnapping too. It does not end well for the Farradays!

Leslie Nielsen is best known for the “Naked Gun” movies and other comedies. He has great range here in this dramatic role. I’ve always been a fan of his.

Perry King later went on to star in a short-lived series in the 1980s, which I loved, called “Riptide.” It had the big pink helicopter and was one of the shows that showed Vietnam vets moving on with their lives – 2 buddies became private investigators in LA. It was quirky and fun until NBC wrecked it (big surprise!).

Bruce Boxleitner went on to star in (I think) the later episodes of “Babylon 5”. I might be wrong about the timing but I know he was in that show. This is also not his only guest appearance on “Five-O” – he guested two to three times on this show.

As far as that back way to the airport, yeah good luck trying to do that now! Granted this was 50 years ago and the Big Island but still. That seems weird that Jay could just drive up to the fence and open the gate. Real secure there, guys!

Speaking of the Big Island, this is where this episode was filmed. It’s beautiful! The Parker Ranch is obviously used for the filming in some places but do they get a thanks? I can’t remember.

In the meantime, Happy 50th, “We Hang Our Own”!!

I think Bruce Boxleitner was on Babylon 5 pretty much from the start. He definitely didn’t join during the later seasons. Most likely he left in the later seasons.

But to me he will always be the spy Lee Stetson/Scarecrow on the 80s CBS show SCARECROW AND MRS. KING, with Kate Jackson playing Mrs. King. A very underrated series. I think it’s one of the best shows to come out of the 80s. A wonderful light-hearted spy show (but with murders pretty much in every episode lol) which was really the only spy show to come out of the 80s. Scarecrow was the seasoned agent and Mrs. King was the civilian (soccer mom) helping him. Sort of a bit like The Man from UNCLE in that regard. Except much better!! Of course romance ensues between the two

Season 7 "We Hang Our Own" 3.25 Stars ⭐⭐⭐ Out Of 4 Stars.

In the episode "We Hang Our Own," McGarrett and the HFO 🌊 team goes up against a rich and powerful ranch owner Colonel Farraday. The Colonel demands justice when his good-looking college son Cam Farraday returns to the Ranch on the Big Island and is supposedly killed by Larry. Cam was suppose to take over the ranch but the Colonel appears quite healthy and strong to continue his duties. Jay picks up Cam from the airport driving a Jeep and they stop for a drink at a local bar. Tension begins when Cam sees Carmen his old girlfriend. While Cam was studying at College, Carmen married Larry. A few minutes later, Larry a hot head and jealous type arrives and Cam and Larry have a good fight battle behind the bar. NO dispute Cam and Larry had a fight behind the bar. Cam although beat up was still alive. A twist occurs when Jay who should have helped his brother strikes the beaten Cam with a rock finishing him off and killing Cam. Jay then hurles the bloody rock 🪨 a great distance.

The episode moves along where Larry is charged with a Misdemeanor but not Murder 1. Colonel Farraday is not happy and soon after Larry is kidnapped late at night. This is 1 weakness of the episode. The Colonel was very angry about the Judge's decision and voiced his displeasure about it. Should have had a policeman there or doing patrols. Larry's kidnapping was very obvious and predictable. Colonel now has the upper hand as he knows every inch of the 200,000 acre ranch. McG later arrives with a search warrant to locate Larry on the Ranch. Larry is moved easily around the property via Walkie Talkie and they find nothing. McG and HFO team later search the Cam-Larry fight area looking for a possible murder weapon. Che Fong believes the tire rim was not sufficient to commit the type of wound on Cam's head. They locate the rock in high and dense foliage a great distance away. After an examination of the rock, it's bloody alright and they match Jay's fingerprint. It's time for Larry to be hanged for murdering Cam. Colonel Farraday plays Judge, Jury, and Executioner as he reads from the Bible condemning Larry to his fate. McG and Danno arrive to pick up Jay for the murder of his brother and prevent Larry's hanging.

I think We Hang Our Own is better than 3 Stars but less than 3.5 stars. I think Larry's kidnapping was too obvious and predictable. Should have had some police protection considering the angry powerful Colonel Farraday wanting justice. It's also hard to believe they would locate Jay's bloody rock the murder weapon. A few things around the back of the bar could just have been easily caused Cam's death. I did enjoy the clashing of 2 lions 🦁🦁 McGarrett and the Colonel Farraday. Both strong and intelligent men. Two Men believers in honor and justice. JC

Thanks for mentioning Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Ringfire! I remembered that one too but my post was getting a bit long.

Thanks for Babylon 5 clarification too - I couldn't remember! I know they had some cast switching and the lead guy changed. According to the Wikipedia article (for what's it worth - it is open sourced), Boxleitner took over in Season 2.
